17 years elapse since Lachin’s occupation

63331 thousand men had been displaced as a result of occupation.17 years elapse from occupation of Lachin region by Armenians. Armenian aggressors destroyed hundreds of public amenities, tens of settlements, villages and historical monuments on 17th may, 1992. 63 thousand and 341 Azerbaijanis were dislocated from their native lands as a result of this occupation. Occupation history of Lachin region is following: Armenian armed forces having occupied districts and populated areas around Lachin intensively shelled out at the centre of the region. Armenian army starting attacks from an area called Turshsu of Shusha city and Gorus region of Armenia occupied Lachin on the night from 16th to 17th May, 1992. Notable major part of enemy’s forces realizing the region’s occupation entered through Lachin corridor. Local citizens say many of Azerbaijan armed forces had left battle-field a day before occupation of the region. Lachin citizen Vaish Hasanov said in his talk to ANS reporter: “Troops had left completely on 17, May. There remained five or six men in the region. We stopped a vehicle toprevent it from leaving” remembers those days. Notable major armed forces that deserted from Lachin and regions around it were involved to political opposition in Baku. Namely, the army joining political actions in the capital left the battle-fields without control. Subsequently Lachin entered the list of systematically occupied regions. Occupation of Lachin with positions of strategic importance caused a serious damage to Azerbaijan’s economy. Lachin region with its 1835 sq. km. territory has been known as administrative unit since 1930. Notable the region with approximately 63 thousand population included 122 villages. As a result of occupation Armenian armed forces destroyed more than 30 monuments of cultural and historical importance. Apart from that, the light industry centers as well agricultural fields made useless by the enemies.
